An Innovative Activity Center:
Qionghai Middle School

This project is located in the Qionghai City. The overall campus architecture design pursues simple and bright simple style in shape, so as to highlight the architectural cultural characteristics of modern coastal city. The project adopts the local Qiongbei style of architectural color matching, so that the architectural art carries the local characteristics - gray white and wood color, the history of Qionghai culture and contemporary advanced education concept. At the same time, taking into account the architectural characteristics of the school, emphasizing the stability and softness. It can not only have a good organizational function and streamline, but also create a relaxed living wave and ordered campus atmosphere. As far as possible, the outdoor space is used as a sports space for students, so that students can develop morally, intellectually, physically, aesthetically and labor in an all-round way.

Innovation in a Complex, Confined Site

Breaking from traditional orthogonal grids, the building introduces diagonal elements to transform negative spaces into positive, stimulating ones. The angular outdoor forms act as a dynamic visual focus. The divergent form resolves site complexities while enabling multi-directional visual connections. East-west glass curtain walls frame views of the playground and landscape, optimizing sightlines in a dense context.

The divergent layout generates semi-enclosed courtyards, creating "boundary" and "end" spaces ideal for student occupancy. This intimate scale maximizes activity frequency, enhances spatial quality on compact land, and invigorates the external areas, contributing to a dynamic campus complex.

The fair-faced concrete facade with narrow strip windows evokes brutalism while reinforcing the semi-enclosed spaces. On the landscape-facing sides, large floor-to-ceiling windows and a saw-tooth, setback terrace create a striking contrast between rough and delicate elements.

Rich and Varied Functional Spaces

The center integrates diverse functions like dining and sports. Enclosed activity rooms minimize noise, while the open core—housing the main activity areas and canteen—promotes transparency and interaction. On the third floor, grand steps lead to a roof garden, blending indoor and outdoor spaces for enhanced engagement.

Responding to Hainan's intense sun and rainy season, the facade employs a self-shading strategy with recessed volumes. The multi-directional massing combined with this system creates a unique visual identity, extends the campus's sustainability ethos, and results in a passive, energy-efficient building adapted to local conditions.
